A,  E,  I,  O, and U  are vowels

Each vowel makes two sounds, a short sound and a long sound.

If there are two vowels, the first vowel will make the long sound, and the second vowel will be silent.

Cape - Long sound of A

In the word of  "cape",  there are two vowels.  The first vowel "a" makes the long sound.  The second vowel "e" stays silent.  It is la ong vowel silent e pattern.
